Ahead of the first ODI in London, Shikhar Dhawan posted a video of him on Instagram while practicing in the nets and captioned, “Gearing up for ODI Series! Can’t wait to get on the field #cricket #match #odi #practice.”
Out of T20I reckoning, Dhawan still holds a formidable position in the ODI set-up and will eye a place in the ODI World Cup squad of 2023. With the emergence of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan and the presence of formidable pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul in the side, Dhawan has found it tough to make the T20I squad.
However, with a proven track record for the Indian ODI side, Dhawan will bring his experience to the play. In long terms he will be eyeing a place in the Indian team for the ODI World Cup in India in 2023.
Will Dhawan make Playing XI against England on Tuesday?
Shikhar Dhawan has been pushed down the pecking order for the opener’s position as he finds competition from Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad. While Gaikwad is not part of the ODI squad Ishan Kishan will be pushing for a place in the Playing XI on Tuesday.
It also worth noting that neither of Kishan and Gaikwad are India’s first choice openers with ODI vice-captain KL Rahul on the treatment table due to sports hernia.
However, if Dhawan does return to the Indian side, we will see the reunion of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan that helped India win the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Dhawan to lead India in the ODI series against West Indies-
- The upcoming series will mark Dhawan’s return to the Indian team after the ODI series against South Africa earlier this year.
- Dhawan will return for his second India captaincy stint after the Sri Lanka series last year.
- All three ODIs will take place at Port of Spain after which India will play the West Indies in five T20Is, the squad for which is yet to be announced.
- The first ODI starts on July 22, five days after India play the last ODI against England, one of the reasons why a younger squad has been selected.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Hooda will be back, along with Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer in the middle order, while Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel and Jadeja will be the spin options.
