“Karthik felt pain in his lower back. We haven’t heard about the severity of his back spasm. The medical team is working to get him fit as heat treatment and massaging helps reduce the discomfort, quickly. So don’t rule him out yet,” a senior BCCI official privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Midway through the Proteas’ innings on Sunday, Karthik departed the field. The game was completed by Rishabh Pant who donned the gloves for the first time in T20 WC 2022. The veteran was seen supporting his back as Team India physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain helped him get off the ground.
“He had some issues with his back and I didn’t meet him after the match. I’ll talk to him once we go back to the hotel and wait for the physio’s report,” Bhuvneshwar Kumar said at the post-match press conference.
The official statement regarding Dinesh Karthik’s extent of the injury is yet to be published by the BCCI.
Another reason that Rishabh Pant could feature in the match against Bangladesh is the continuous struggle of India’s vice-captain KL Rahul at the opening.
India’s success in T20I cricket over the past year has been built on ruthless selection and clear thinking in terms of the batting order.
No one decision illustrates that strategy more than Dinesh Karthik’s return behind the stumps and as a designated finisher in the batting line-up at the expense of Rishabh Pant.
KL Rahul is the player – even if Karthik is not injured – that Pant could potentially replace, with the right-hander returning three single-figure scores in the opening T20 World Cup matches, 4 against Pakistan, and 9 each against Netherlands and South Africa.
