Rohit Sharma had the best seat in the house as KL Rahul went berserk at the Gabba on Monday. Playing against world champions Australia, Rahul treated Pat Cummins and Co with absolute disdain as he raced to fine half-century in a fine opening partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma at the top of the order.
The Indian vice-captain began his innings with caution before fetching a couple of delightful cover drives. He then followed it up with a pull shot six to welcome Pat Cummins into the attack. Such was Rahul’s dominance that he raced to 43 in no time, even as Rohit Sharma had played a couple of deliveries, yet to get off the mark.

KL Rahul eventually reached his half-century in 27 balls when India’s score read 57, with only 1 run from Rohit Sharma’s bat. He eventually was dismissed for 57 off 33 balls, finding Ashton Agar in the deep. The Indian vice-captain however had done his job, smashing six fours and three sixes in his stay at the crease.
Rahul while consistent, has always been a topic of debate due to his strike rate. In the second warm-up match against Western Australia, the Indian opener was batting on a run-a-ball 39 in India’s chase of 169. While he did accelerate to 74 off 55, it nonetheless sparked a debate on his batting considering India’s all-out approach at the top. Monday’s knock should all but dissipate those concerns and it bodes well for the Men in Blue heading into the tournament.
