Shami had a poor campaign in the T20 World Cup last year, whereas Ashwin’s performance was not impressive either. According to reports in the Times of India, the duo could be excluded from the Indian squad for the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup.

“His (Shami’s) ODI career is much better placed. But this IPL will be a kind of trial for him to be considered for the T20 World Cup and he also understands it. Rahul (Chahar) is an exciting prospect. This IPL will be an indicator and help the selectors on trim the pool of players,” a BCCI official told TOI.

Notably, India has got a plethora of pace options in the likes of Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel and Avesh Khan, whereas when it comes to spinners, the men in blue are likely to trust Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal to do the job, with Rahul Chahar providing a good backup option. Since the tournament will be held on pace-friendly tracks of Australia, it seems unlikely that India will pick more than three spin options.

Hence, it seems certain that speedster Shami and off-spinner Ashwin will need to operate at the very highest level in IPL 2022 to be considered for selection in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Shami will be seen playing for Gujarat Titans, whereas Ashwin will play for Rajasthan Royals.
