Suryakumar Yadav has looked a bit lost in the India tour of the West Indies 2023. The batter made just 78 runs in the 3-match IND vs WI ODI series, failing to make his mark in 50-over cricket once again. However, with the shift from ODI to T20, everyone expected the World No. 1 T20I batter to show how good he is in the shortest format of the game.
Instead, things went from bad to worse for Suryakumar Yadav. In the first two IND vs WI T20s, the right-hand batter has made just 22 runs at a strike rate of 92. With three more matches, the Mumbai batter will be hoping to make the most of the series and put his name in contention for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup. How has Suryakumar Yadav performed in 2023?
Suryakumar had a great 2023 season in the IPL (India Premier League) with his franchise, the Mumbai Indians. The batter had his best season in 12 years of playing in the IPL. He made 605 runs, striking at 181 (his highest ever) in 16 matches, including his first IPL hundred. Surya also ended the season ranked 6th in the orange cap race.

He has been in fine touch in T20Is as well, making 289 runs in 8 matches at a career-high average of 48. However, the batter’s strike reached the lowest in his three years of playing. Surya had a strike rate of 155 in 2021, 187 in 2022, and has now plummeted to 145 in 2023.

Suryakumar Yadav has made 3249 runs in 139 matches in the IPL in 12 seasons. Out of the 12 seasons he’s played in, the batter has represented Kolkata Knight Rider in four seasons (2014–17), and in the remaining eight, he’s played for the Mumbai Indians.
The batter has a great career strike rate of 143.32 but averages 32. In his first five seasons in the T20 event, he crossed the 50-run mark just once in 55 matches. In the last five seasons, however, the batter has made 16 fifties and one century in 70 matches.

The batter from Mumbai has been one of the most impressive players since his debut in 2021. In 50 matches, he has made 1697 runs at a mind-boggling strike rate of 173.69 while averaging 44.65. The batter currently holds the number one spot in the T20I batting ranking and holds the record for the highest strike in the history of T20I cricket.
Surya is just behind Mohammad Rizwan in the most runs made in a calendar year. In 2022, he made 1164 runs in comparison to Rizwan’s 1326. However, Surya had a strike rate of 187.43 during the year, 53 more than Rizwan, and subsequently won the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award.
