Hockey India League revival on cards in 2025, president Dilip Tirkey confirms

Hockey India President, Dilip Tirkey, is hopeful for the revival of the Hockey India League (HIL) in late 2024 or early 2025, pending approval from the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

During discussions at the FIH Pro League in Bhubaneswar, Tirkey indicated that plans for the league’s scheduling are nearing finalization, targeting a timeframe between December ’24 and January ’25 for its commencement. He also announced the selection of a commercial and marketing agency for the HIL, signalling progress in its development.

“We are almost done with the talks about the window for Hockey India League. We have already announced a commercial and marketing agency for the league.,” Tirkey told ESPN.

“We are getting positive responses, which is really good for the future of Indian hockey,” he said.

He added, “We are still thinking about the venues. We will take a decision on whether to do the league in a home-away format or conduct it in two or three venues.”

The revamped HIL will feature eight men’s teams and four women’s teams, with matches scheduled to occur simultaneously.

Tirkey expressed positive responses from potential franchise owners interested in acquiring teams for the league, reflecting promising prospects for Indian hockey’s future.

Venue options are still under consideration, with decisions pending on whether to adopt a home-away format or consolidate matches in two or three locations.

With the 2024 Paris Olympics approaching, Tirkey emphasized the significance of the year for Indian hockey, anticipating the HIL’s reintroduction to provide a boost to the sport domestically.
