Hockey WC Quarterfinal RACE: Hockey WC Crossovers Fixture – South Korea  pulled off and upset beating Argentina on penalties. The exciting contest saw both teams ending the regulation time with score of 5-5 . In the shoot-out Korea edged out Argentina 3-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the other match of the day, Germany qualified for the quarter-final of the men’s hockey world cup after crushing France 5-1 in the first match of the day. For Germany  Miltkau Marco, Wellen Niklas, Grambusch Mats, Trompertz Moritz and Peillat Gonzalo scored the goals. Goyet François scored the only goal for France.

India’s dream of qualifying for the quarterfinal of Hockey WC ended with defeat to New Zealand. Both the teams were tied at 3-3 following the end of the regulation time. In the penalty shootout, the black sticks (NZ) held their nerves to edge out the host 5-4 in the shootout.

Meanwhile in the first match of the day Malaysia took on Spain for a place in the quarterfinal. The regulation time saw both the teams tied at 2 goals apiece resulting in a shootout. Spain edged out  Malaysia 4-3 on penalties to set up quarterfinal clash against Australia.

Australia with a thumping 9-2 win over SouthAfrica have confirmed their spot in the quarterfinals. Australia join Netherlands and England in the QFs. However, 5 teams are still in fray including India. Top teams from each group will earn a direct QF spot. The second and third-placed teams in each group will go through Cross-Overs or pre-quarterfinal round.   • January 22: New Zealand beat India by 5-4 (Shoot-out)

So far 4 teams have earned direct qualification to the quarterfinal stage. The Netherlands topped Pool C with nine points while. The Dutch men won all their three group matches and have dominated so far.

Meanwhile, England finished on top of Group D. They finished the group stages with 2 wins and a draw and secured 7 points. India too finished with the same numbers. However, England managed to pip the hosts as they had a better goal difference.

Australia with a thumping 9-2 win over SouthAfrica have also sealed their QF spot from A. From Pool B, Belgium and Germany both finished with 7 points each. But Belgium pipped Germany on a better goal-difference.

Teams fighting for quarterfinal spots

  • Currently, 8 teams are in contention to seal the remaining 4 places in the last-8 stage of the World Cup.
  • Teams that have finished in the second and third spot in the group stages will be playing a cross-over match in order to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
  • Malaysia vs Spain and India vs NewZealand will be top clashes in Cross-Overs on January 22.
  • Argentina vs Korea and Germany vs France will decide the last two quarterfinalists on January 23.

India vs New Zealand 

Hosts India missed the direct entry to the quarterfinal by a whisker. The team led by Harmanpreet Singh won two group matches, while their contest against England ended in a draw. They ended the group stages with 7 points on the board and equalled England’s tally however an inderior goal difference made them finish second in their pool. They will now face New Zealand in the cross-overs.

New Zealand didn’t have a great time in the group stages. They registered just a solitary victory and finished third in their pool behind Netherlands and Malaysia. They have now earned a spot in the cross-overs and will face a big challenge against India in order to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Spain vs Malaysia

Spain meanwhile secured the third spot in Pool D. They managed to register just a solitary victory in the group stages against Wales. The eighth ranked side in the world will now face Malaysia in order to seal a spot in the quarterfinals.

Malaysia have done well in the group stages. After losing their first group game 0-4 against Netherlands, they made a good comeback with a win against Chile. They also stunned a higher-ranked New Zealand with a 3-2 win. The Malaysians will aim to continue their good show against Spain in the cross-overs.
