Ons Jabeur has already had numerous milestones during her breakthrough 2021 season and she continued to add another feather to her cap at the BNP Paribas Open 2021. She became the first Arab player to break into the top 10 following her quarter-final win over 18th-seeded Anett Kontaveit of Estonia. She has won 48 games this season, the most by a WTA player. Jabeur will be playing in her first WTA 1000 semi-final, having previously lost all three of her quarterfinal attempts.
Her opponent, Paula Badosa became the first Spanish woman since 2003 to advance to the semifinals in Indian Wells after scoring back-to-back wins over major champs. Bados had a tough draw at the BNP Paribas Open 2021, but clinched wins over Coco Gauff, Barbora Krejcikova and Angelique Kerber to reach the final, and hasn’t dropped a set in either of those matches.
Badosa and Jabeur have played twice on tour, both on hard courts, and both times it came down to the wire. Badosa won their first meeting at the 2015 US Open, winning 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 in the first round of qualifying. Jabeur narrowly won out earlier this year in Miami, winning 7-6, 5-7, 7-5 in over two-and-a-half hours.
