This incident took place in 2019, when Rubiales and Pique were involved in discussions with the Saudi Arabian authorities for staging the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia for three seasons. Earlier this year, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao took part in the Supercopa de Espana in Riyadh.
However, latest findings suggest that Rubiales, with help from Pique, charged €24 million from the host nation for giving hosting rights, beyond the previously reported €40 million/year deal. Of this, reportedly €6 million were given to Pique for playing a crucial role in the discussions and maintaining liaison between the Saudi authorities and the Spanish football federation. Pique’s involvement, however, was hidden by the RFEF.

The allegations do not end here, since it also is being reported that since the deal, Rubiales’ salary has miraculously increased manifolds, while Pique’s company Kosmos is also bagging €4 million every year for his involvement in the discussions.

El Confidencial claims to have gotten access to an audio conversation between Pique and Rubiales, where the Barcelona defender is heard saying “Real Madrid would accept €8m man. You can do €8m for Madrid and €8m for Barça. You can do €2m and €1m for the other two. And the federation could stay with €6m. And we can push Saudi Arabia for an extra €1-2m.”
“They said they would pay tomorrow. The thing is that they said they would only pay you (Rubiales) but it would not make sense if they wouldn’t pay us too. We all have to get paid. If we don’t, we’re not going. I need your backing,” Pique further told Rubiales.
