Notably, Wimbledon were stripped off their rankings status after they announced that Russian and Belarussian players would not be allowed to compete in the event, given the Russo-Ukraine War. With no rankings system in place, the competition in effectively reduced to an exhibition tournament and both the players and the Wimbledon officials have been taken aback by this decision.

Justifying their stance, ATP recently wrote in a statement “The ability for players of any nationality to enter tournaments based on merit, and without discrimination, is fundamental to our Tour. The decision by Wimbledon to ban Russian and Belarusian players from competing in the UK this summer undermines this principle and the integrity of the ATP Ranking system. It is also inconsistent with our Rankings agreement. Absent a change in circumstances, it is with great regret and reluctance that we see no option but to remove ATP Ranking points from Wimbledon for 2022.”

In a bid to get the ranking system back, representatives of the tournament will be travelling to France sometime later this week. They are hopeful of reaching a compromise and a few theories have emerged about when such a situation will be possible.

Many feel that this matter could be solved by the temporary reintroduction of grass-court seeding formula, which was abandoned last year. It will help the organizers determine seedings, and subsequently,  the entries and draws for the next season.

Meanwhile, the players have openly expressed their dissent with the current proceedings. Last year’s finalist Karolina Pliskova said “I think it’s super tough and unfair and a bad decision, that’s what I think.” Meanwhile, French player Benoit Paire also echoed similar sentiments as he said “I’m sorry for Russians (players) but they are the ones causing all the trouble.
