The Race’s Scott Mitchell claims that McLaren can’t choose to end his deal early. The report states “It’s Ricciardo with the option of triggering a break clause. So whether Ricciardo’s 2023 contract is upheld seems to be down to him. It seems to be his choice to make, at least. And it’s worth noting he has so far had nothing bad to say about how McLaren has treated him, or the effort it is putting in to help him turn things around.”

“That’s important because how Ricciardo feels within McLaren will inform his decision. Either McLaren will decide to persevere to the very end or it will conclude this just isn’t working out and that it’s in its best interest if Ricciardo leaves. It could then try to encourage Ricciardo to do that,” Mitchell further explained.
Since the time Ricciardo has joined McLaren, he hasn’t been able to live up to the expectation everybody had of him. He has been outpaced by his teammate Lando Norris on several occasions.

Ricciardo did manage to win the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, but even in that race, Norris came second and handed McLaren their first 1-2 finish in a Grand Prix after many years. Meanwhile, the honey badger finished the 2021 season in the eighth spot with 115 points.

The 2022 season started on a low note again for Daniel as he is still not able to come to terms with his MCL36 challenger. He is still struggling to find any kind of race pace as in the seven races he has one retirement to his name.
His best finish came at Australian Grand Prix, where he finished sixth. But apart from that in the other five races, he finished below the tenth spot and registered zero points cumulatively. Ricciardo sees himself down in the eleventh spot in the drivers’ standings with just 11 points to his name.
