Formula 1: Mercedes ace Lewis Hamilton knighted just days after heartbreaking loss in Abu Dhabi – Sir Lewis Hamilton officially received his knighthood from the Prince of Wales at the Windsor Castle on Wednesday. The ceremony comes days after the 36-year-old fell just short of a record 8th World Drivers Championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Nonetheless, Hamilton still remains the most successful driver in F1 history, tied with Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher for most championship wins.

Lewis Hamilton appeared at Windsor Castle alongside his mother Carmen, who watched her son become the fourth Formula 1 driver in history to be knighted, following on from Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jack Brabham. The 36-year-old was awarded his knighthood and the resulting title in the 2021 New Year Honours list after matching Michael Schumacher with his seventh Formula 1 World Championship.

The Formula 1 legend missed out on a record eighth title this season after a nail-biting conclusion to the season in Abu Dhabi as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took the title for the first time. But Sir Lewis Hamilton will be back to try and break the record in 2022 alongside new teammate George Russell, who replaces the outgoing Valterri Bottas.
Hamilton currently has the most wins (103) in Formula 1 history, the most points, consecutive race starts, pole positions and podium finishes. And while he did not break the tie, he helped take a record eighth consecutive constructors’ championship with Hamilton finishing second and Valtteri Bottas sixth to winner Verstappen on Sunday.
