The 2020 F3 runner-up had enjoyed what he called an “unforgettable” day at the hands of the 2019 Alfa Romeo C38, as he completed a private test at the Hungaroring in 2021.
According to the 2022 regulations, all teams must give a young driver an outing in FP1 at least twice this season. The Sauber Academy driver Pourchaire is currently third in the F2 championship standings, there has been an expectation that the young French driver would be given an FP1 outing at some point this season.

Formula 1: Alfa Romeo Team Principal Frederic Vasseur speaks on Theo and Zhou Guanyu
“We will find an FP1 [session] because it’s per regulation that you have to give an FP1 to the rookie,” said Vasseur. “And you can’t imagine giving the rookie session to Singapore, even Suzuka will be difficult, even if I think that Max Verstappen did it a couple of years ago,” Vasseur added.

Vasseur on being questioned about the performance of driver Zhou Guanyu by other young drivers. The Alfa Romeo team manager heaped praise on the rookie’s season-opening performance, claiming that Zhou had exceeded their initial expectations for him and called him the “ideal pick” for the seat in 2022.

“The initial aim was to get to Q2, I think he was in Q2 in race one and scored points in race one, and then around mid-season he has been able to do Q3 two times in a row, he was even out-qualifying Valtteri Bottas,” Vasseur concluded.

He said Zhou scored again in Montreal, and while there were some reliability difficulties, he had previously been able to score two or three times. I think that was the best decision, and I am extremely happy with the outcomes and Zhou’s behavior as we got out of the car together.

Alfa Romeo have a total of 51 points and are sixth in the championship. They are 17 points in front of Haas, and 30 points behind Alpine ahead of the 2022 French Grand Prix.
