Argentina had a harsh taste of reality on Wednesday as their 2022 World Cup opening against Saudi Arabia went disastrously wrong, losing 2-1 despite leading 1-0 in the first half. When Lionel Messi converted an early penalty to put the South American giants ahead, everything appeared to be on track, but a series of goals ruled out for offside in the first half ensured that Saudi Arabia were still in the game at half time.

Saudi Arabia, urged on by a large crowd, came out fighting in the second half and performed admirably. Within three minutes of the restart, they had equalised through Saleh Alshehri, shocking Argentina. But, just five minutes later, Salem Aldawsari curled in a magnificent second, picking out the top corner from the box’s outer edge. Saudi Arabia improved dramatically after that, and their defence was flawless. Hassan Al-Tambakti celebrated a goal-saving challenge on Messi as if it had been his own goal, while goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais was immaculate. By the end, Herve Renard’s team had earned their historic victory, leaving Messi and Argentina scratching their heads.

Japan pulled off a miracle after taking encouragement from Saudi Arabia’s victory against Argentina the day before. The Asian team comes back with a spectacular effort to take all three points from the 2014 World Cup Champions. Germany dominated the first half, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring from the penalty spot. However, in a game of two halves, Japan came back with an equaliser from Ritsu Doan. Takuma Asano scored in the last seconds of the game to give the Asian team victory.
