On TikTok, Qatar Living, which has been branded the nation’s first official community platform, has been posting videos showing hordes of assembled “fans” from other nations, some of whom are sporting flags, painted faces, and banners. It’s unclear if the spectators are foreign labourers living in Qatar who have been out late partying or if the celebrations have been orchestrated by the government.

One video depicts a sea of apparent Brazilian fans waving flags along Doha Corniche, the city’s waterfront promenade, while other clips include Portugal, Argentina, Ghana, Cameroon, and Tunisia supporters. Another clip appears to show England supporters marching through the streets while singing and playing the drums while carrying a banner that reads, “It’s coming home.”

Questions have been raised regarding the validity of the fans because of how thoroughly managed and produced the supporters’ behaviour appears to be. Others have questioned why so many fans have arrived more than a week before the World Cup begins and accused Qatar of staging the marches using “fake” fans. Other social media users are said to have seen the same “fans” supporting other nations in different videos. While some noted the absence of female fans from the gathering.

Qatar has previously been charged with employing “fake” supporters. In order to make stadiums that were mainly empty look full, Qatar was charged in 2014 with hiring migrant labourers to pose as sports enthusiasts.

At the time, immigrants said they had come to the international beach volleyball tournament in Qatar for the money rather than the sport itself.
Many employees claimed that they frequently fake headcounts at sporting events. During the competition, French players Edouard Rowlandson and Youssef Krou were engaged in a match, which gave the impression that the arena was nearly full as workers began to fill seats.
