Messi missed PSG’s match against Auxerre as he recovered from a minor injury that will not prohibit him from appearing in the World Cup. According to Argentine reporter Gaston Edul, the 35-year-old former Barcelona star will begin his World Cup preparations, as Argentina is slated to exercise with half of its squad for open training at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi. He was seen coming alongside Leandro Paredes, who is on loan from PSG to Juventus this season.

Argentina is one of the favourites in Qatar, with a current undefeated record of 35 games dating back to 2019. After beating Brazil 1-0 in 2021, Argentina won the Copa America, Messi’s only championship with Argentina.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner also said that the present La Albiceleste squad is identical to the one that lost in extra time to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.

“At World Cups, there are always things that happen that you don’t imagine,” Messi, told. “At the 2014 World Cup, we performed very well, which was an unforgettable experience. I enjoyed it a lot, and where it became clear to me more than ever that the main and most important thing is to be a strong and united group.”

I feel a lot of similarities between this group and the 2014 World Cup. It is a group that always, whatever the match, plays with the same intensity and concentration, and I think that is very important. And we know that we are going to fight for it, but we (don’t think) we are going to be champions from the outset as Argentines think,” he added.

Argentina will play a friendly against the UAE on Wednesday in preparation for their FIFA World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia the following week. Argentina is in Group C with Mexico, Poland, and Saudi Arabia and will beging the campaign against the latter.
