As per the Daily Mail, Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates have renounced five-star luxury for student accommodation for the upcoming Qatar World Cup. The change comes in order to help La Albiceleste can enjoy traditional beef barbecues, which the 5-star facilities do no provide.
Messi and Co arrived in Doha on Thursday and headed straight to the student halls of Qatar university. The accommodation is modest at best, with bunk beds, a lacklustre gym and minimal facilities. The facility however allows the squad to enjoy and organise mouth-watering asados, traditional barbecues that are one of the country’s culinary delights.
A special area has been built on the expansive campus for Messi and Co, allowing them to cook beef teaks and sausages which will be cooked in the traditional Argentine way. The preparation sees it cooked with lightly coated coarse salt, accompanied by salad and wine. The latter, however, is likely to be under the control of the support staff.

The beef from Argentina is considered amongst the finest in the world, and it was specially flown from the South American country to Qatar for Lionel Messi and his team. A special asado chef will also be on hand to ensure that it is cooked just as it would be in Argentina.
A source from the Argentina Football Association told MailOnline, “We visited the campus several times and chose it because it has great facilities and open-air space for asados. This is very important to the players and Argentines in general, it’s part of our culture. We want to make them feel at home while they are in Qatar and the best way to do this is to make sure that they get a taste of home while focusing on the football.”
He added: ‘You could say other teams have opted to stay in more luxurious accommodation but our team is the best in the world which also deserves the best beef. Our focus is to win the World Cup, not the quality of the hotel we are staying in.’
The section of the Qatar University campus housing the Argentina team is made up of 90 rooms and has state-of-the-art sports facilities, an Olympic size swimming pool and its own 10,000-capacity football stadium.
