FIFA World Cup 2022: Chile, Colombia, and Nigeria knocked out – It has been a sorry state of affairs for Chile, Colombia, and Nigeria who bowed out of the upcoming World Cup group stage spots. Chile and Colombia were in contention to make it to the fifth spot of the CONMEBOL, but Peru with a resounding victory over Paraguay sealed the playoff spot. Chile

The South American finished seventh on the CONMEBOL qualifier standings after handsomely losing 2-0 to Uruguay. Chile won just 5 games out of their 18 scheduled games. They drew 4 and lost the other 9 games.

Chile was in contention to take the fifth-place spot and play the group stage qualifiers, however, a determined Peru preserved their group stage hopes with a win over Paraguay. Football fans will certainly be sad to know that Alexis Sanchez and Co won’t make it to the Qatar World Cup scheduled to take place in winter this year.

Colombia

Yet another CONMEBOL team suffered the same fate as Chile as they failed to make it to the fifth spot to contest for the group stage qualifiers. The top four teams of CONMEBOL make it directly to the group stages while the fifth-placed team makes it to the playoffs.

Colombia finished sixth on the table with just a solitary point behind Peru. Colombia won 5 of their games, drew 8, and lost 5 games. A 1-0 win over Venezuela was not enough for James Rodriquez and Co were not enough as Peru’s win over Paraguay sealed their fate.

Nigeria

The most passionate African nation will also miss the Qatar World Cup after their disappointing game against Ghana. An away goal by Ghana was enough to knock out Nigeria despite the game ending as a 1-1 draw.

The first leg too ended in a 0-0 draw. However, Thomas Partey’s strike in the 10th minute of the game sealed the fate for Nigeria. Though William Troost-Ekong pulled a goal back for the hosts in the first half, the away game rule was enough for Ghana to move ahead.

Nigeria played well in the CAF group stage games. They topped their group by winning 4 games and losing a solitary game.
