One Love Armband: The discussion regarding the ‘OneLove’ Armband by FIFA was quite a fierce one during the Men’s World Cup in Qatar towards the end of last year. The armbands were banned at the men’s tournament in Qatar over the winter. Now, the same discussions are cropping up as the FIFA Women’s World Cup is to be played in 2023. Despite rumors that they would be prohibited, FIFA maintains that discussions over captains wearing rainbow “OneLove” armbands for the Women’s World Cup this summer are still ongoing. Threats of sanctions were used to discourage players from donning the armbands at the men’s World Cup in Qatar, and a similar approach may be implemented in Australia and New Zealand in July.

 FIFA issues STATEMENT

During a World Cup planning workshop, the German FA brought up the matter with FIFA. Later, according to reports from Bild in Germany, FIFA had forbidden the team from donning the armbands. Although, a FIFA spokesperson has insisted that no final decision has been taken as of yet.

Talking to Sky Sports Football, the FIFA spokesman said, ‘At a team workshop, FIFA was asked about equipment and competition regulations in relation to the 2023 FIFA Women`s World Cup. FIFA wishes to reiterate that no decision has been taken in relation to armbands. FIFA remains committed to ongoing dialogue with players and member associations.’

Currently, if a player or captain dons any armband that isn’t approved by FIFA during one of FIFA’s competitions, they could be disciplined. This became a problem especially during the men’s World Cup in Qatar when athletes were eager to draw attention to the country’s human rights record and treatment of LGBTQ+ people there.

Leah Williamson’s thoughts regarding the One Love Armband

The rainbow captain’s armband was worn by Leah Williamson throughout England’s winning Euro 2022 campaign. The Lionesses captain also reaffirmed her wish to don a One Love armband while spending the summer in Australia and New Zealand last month.
