The FIFA The Best awards, which have been presented since 2016, are in their seventh year. After years of associating its name with the illustrious Ballon d’Or honours presented by the French periodical France Football, FIFA decided to create its own accolades. The most desired annual global football honours are considered to be the Ballon d’Or, FIFA The Best awards, and Globe Soccer awards.

Choosing the FIFA The Best men’s awards was based on performances between August 2021 and December 2022 to incorporate the FIFA men’s World Cup which was completed in December. Voting for the women’s awards considered events from August 2021 to July 2022, including the Copa America 2022 and Euro 2022 games from the previous summer.

Lionel Messi was expected to add this title to the FIFA World Cup he and Argentina won in December, as well as the World Cup Golden Ball as the competition’s top player. Messi was a crucial member of PSG’s team when they won the French Ligue 1 championship. With Messi, Kylian Mbappe won the Ligue 1 championship in 2022. He also won the Ligue 1 top scorer award and the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot. Prior to missing the World Cup with France due to injury, Karim Benzema finished as the top scorer in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, leading his club team Real Madrid to both championships.
Given that the award, which honours players for their performances, only started in 2017, it may not come as a huge surprise that there haven’t been many multiple winners. The first two best men’s honours went to Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017 as well as the Euros with Portugal in 2016. Robert Lewandowski of Poland followed suit in 2020 and 2021. Messi won this year’s award over Mbappé and Benzema, to match their total.
