The Chess Olympiad is being held in India for the first time and the event has officially kickstarted with a grand opening ceremony on Thursday. Players will begin their action from Friday, 29th July 2022.
The upcoming edition will be the largest ever Chess Olympiad as it has attracted a record 188 teams in the Open section and 162 in the women’s section from across 185 countries in the world would also see six from India in the fray. Each team will have five members and all the 30 players representing India in this tournament are all Grandmasters.
The Indian ‘A’ team, is seeded second behind the star-studded USA is likely to be among the main challengers for the top prize. Meanwhile, the youthful India ‘B’ squad coached by R B Ramesh, is seeded 11th and can be counted among the dark horses. This team has two of India’s youngest grandmasters R Praggnanandhaa and D Gukesh.

What are the rules and format for the Chess Olympiad 2022?
The tournament will be played in a classical format. The players will have to make 40 moves within 90 minutes. The players can offer a draw to their opponent at any point in the match. A team will totally play 11 matches and the team that gets the maximum points at the end of all the rounds will win the title.
