In the Monaco Grand Prix, Leclerc has had two DNFs to his name and one DNS in the last three races at this iconic track. In the 2018 race, he was following the Toro Rosso of Brendon Hartley, leaving the tunnel on Lap 70 when the front brakes failed and he ended up in the back of Hartley’s car.

Then in the next year in 2019, he saw himself as a Ferrari driver but he still had flashbacks of what happened to him in the last race. The day of Qualifying came as Ferrari only opted for a single run in Q1, saving their tyres for later sessions.

He was outpaced by Vettel in the Q1 session and that meant he was eliminated from it. On the race day, he clipped the inside barrier at Rascasse, resulting in a rear right tyre puncture and even the floor took some damage as he made his way back to the pits. It was his second DNF at Monaco in two years.

The 2020 race was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic and happened for the first time since the inception of this track. In 2021, F1 returned to Monte Carlo once again as Leclerc managed provisional pole in Q3 in an underperforming Ferrari.

Things were looking all good for Leclerc but on the race day his left rear driveshaft hub cracked and without the driveshaft, he was not able to move his car. He made his way back to the pits and suffered a DNS against his name.

F1 Monaco GP: Charles Leclerc Monaco GP Curse

2018 – brake failure/accident
2019 – knocked out in Q1, hit the barrier, puncture/floor damage
2020 – race cancelled
2021 – DNF after mechanical failure having crashed in qualifying after setting pole position

This year things might change for Leclerc as he has matured as a driver and will be looking to change his fortune. However, with Ferrari having faced reliability issues this year, he might experience Deja Vu as he retired from the Spanish Grand Prix last week itself after suffering a power unit issue.
