Chasing 202 to win, South Africa had the worst possible start slipping to 6/4 with left-arm seamers David Willey and Reece Topley running riot. Janneman Malan, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram all scored ducks in a shameful collapse for the Proteas.

Heinrich Klassen tried rebuilding the innings but had little support from David Miller and Dwaine Pretorius who got into double figures. Spinners Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali ran through the tail as South Africa were bowled out for just 83 in a shocking collapse days after they posted 333.

Earlier, a long rain delay meant that the match was reduced to 29 overs per side. South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss and chose to bowl first and England came out with their trademark attacking intent.

Jason Roy and Phil Salt, who replaced Ben Stokes in the side, were dismissed early but Jonny Bairstow scored a fine 28 to weather the storm. Dwaine Pretorius made the most of the conditions on the offer to pick up a four-wicket-haul as the hosts struggled to keep the runs flowing.

However, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran rescued the England side, stitching a vital 43-run stand. Curran latter wagged with the tail with David Willey and Adil Rashid also chipping in with some valuable runs to take England past 200.
