This will be the first time both the countries will be facing each other in the Davis Cup. The opening day (September 16) will see only two singles matches being played, while on Saturday, doubles matches are scheduled followed by two more singles. The match will be played at the Kakons Hall in Lillehammer, which is an indoor court facility. The hard court is actually artificially laid over a wooden surface.
India has fielded a strong team with country’s number one singles player Ramkumar Ramanathan (274), Prajnesh Gunneswaran (335), Sumit Nagal (483) and Sasikumar Mukund (416) being named in the singles. Sumit Nagal, who missed the previous Davis Cup contest against Denmark at home makes his return to the squad. But in the doubles, India will miss the services of veteran Rohan Bopanna as he withdrew from the contest due to a knee injury. In his absence, Yuki Bhambri will partner with Saketh Myneni in the doubles.
On paper India is the higher-ranked team as they find themselves in the 25th spot, while Norway is ranked 32nd. However Norway will gave the services of Casper Ruud. The nation’s hopes rests on the shoulders of the 23-year old, who is a double Grand Slam finalist. After Ruud, their second best singles player is Viktor Durasovic, who is ranked 325th in the world.
Each match will be a best of three set and a tie comprises of five matches in total that includes two singles, one doubles and two reverse singles matches. India had blanked Denmark 4-0 in New Delhi in the World Group Play-offs in March this year, which was their last Davis Cup tie.
Apart from Ruud, Norway does not have a big player who could give a tough challenge against the Indians so the Indians would look to win the other three ties, even if they lose the two singles matches against Ruud.
