Nick Kyrgios was at his scintillating best throughout the match as he gave a tough fight to the reigning World No.1. The first set started off on a positive note for both the players as they held on to their first two service games. It was Kyrgios, who took the first break when he broke the Russian in the sixth game to take 4-2 lead in first set. However, Medvedev broke Kyrgios immediately in the next game and held on to his next serve as he levelled the first set 4-4. Medvedev then forced the set into the tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker too it was difficult to seperate both the players but Kyrgios held his nerve to finally win it 13-11.
In the second set, Medvedev decided to up the ante as he broke Kyrgios’ first service game to take 2-0 lead. It soon became a one-way traffic as Kyrgios looked completely off-colour. Medvedev was cruising 5-1 in the set and despite a late comeback from Kyrgios, who broke Medvedev once, the Russian managed to win it 6-3 and levelled the contest.
After losing steam a bit, Kyrgios managed to make a comeback in the third set. However, early in the set, Kyrgios made what could have been a critical mistake. Leading 1-0 and at 30/30 on Medvedev’s serve, the 23rd seed rushed around the net and swatted away a ball that was not going to land anywhere close to the net. By rule, if a ball does not land on your side of the net and spin back to your opponent’s side of the court, you are not allowed to touch the ball on that side. Kyrgios put a finger up in celebration, thinking he had just earned a spot on the highlight reel. Instead, the point went to Medvedev, who escaped the game. Although that seemed it would be a critical juncture, the action proved otherwise.
The 23rd seed then broke from 40/0 down in Medvedev’s next service game and took the lead. From then on, he never allowed the World No. to settle as he began dominating the match. After winning the third set, he broke Kyrgios just twice in the fourth set to seal the game. “What a place to do it,” Kyrgios said. “Packed house in New York!”
Medvedev will lose his top spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on the Monday after the US Open. Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz or Casper Ruud will become World No. 1. Kyrgios advances to his first quarter-final in New York, where he will next play Karen Khachanov. “I want to go all the way,” Kyrgios said. “Hopefully it is possible.”
