The BMF belt is a unique kind of title, so it calls for a unique kind of contest. When Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz squared off in the main event of UFC 244, the BMF championship was officially announced.
Promotion president Dana White decided to revive the BMF belt for the upcoming UFC 291 pay-per-view (PPV) card, which is scheduled for July 29 at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City. Masvidal recently announced his retirement from combat sports.
The lightweight rematch between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje is the main event of UFC 291.
The BMF championship was only ever on the line once, during the UFC 244 main event between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz in November 2019 at Madison Square Garden, which Masvidal won through doctor’s stoppage TKO.
The belt is once again in the spotlight now that “Gamebred” is no longer in active competition. It remains to be seen whether or not the title being a highlighted prize for the promotion will become commonplace or another exception.
During Last weeks press conference Dana White said that “Masvidal has redired, so we put the BMF up. You have no idea how many of these fighters want to fight for the BMF title. They all want to fight for that belt, so it’s fun, it’s different. So, we’ll do it again. I mean, when you think about coming up with it the first time, those two were the right guys. So are these. These are the two right guys for that, too.”
