A host of events are lined up for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. Duran Duran, a new wave music band based out of Birmingham will be headlining the event. One of the highlights of the opening ceremony is that a series of Birmingham born musicians are set to perform in front of the home crowd which will be a major moment to showcase the sounds of this vibrant city to the world.
Birmingham’s multi-Grammy winning Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Saxophonist Soweto Kinch, RnB vocalists Indigo Marshall and Gambimi will be some of the performers who will enthrall the crowd. Birmingham Conservatoire graduate. Samantha Oxborough will take the prestigious role of performing the National Anthem for the United Kingdom.
A Bhangra performance is also on the cards as a rehearsal video by DJ Auden Allen showcased him playing out a Punjabi song.
The Commonwealth Games 2022 is set to feature more than 5000 athletes from 72 nations who will be competing in 20 different sporting events. India will have 214 athletes with 107 female athletes and 108 male compatriots, who will be competing in as many as 16 events.
Meanwhile, India received a huge blow as Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra suffered a groin injury and is ruled out of CWG 2022. The 24-year old Javelin thrower was a sure-shot medal contender having already won the gold in 2018. He was also expected to be the flag-bearer for India and now PV Sindhu is likely to lead the Indian contingent at the opening ceremony.
