The 20-year old Sheuli’s lift of 313 kgs is 10 kgs more than Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad who bagged the silver by lifting 303 kgs (138 + 165 kgs. Canada’s Shad Darsigny bagged bronze with a total lift of 298 kgs. Sheuli was at his best in his maiden Commonwealth Games as he successfully lifted in 5 out of his 6 attempts.
The Boy from Bengal started by lifting 137 kgs in the snatch event in his first attempt. In his second attempt, he managed to lift 140 kgs and then went on to lift 143 kgs successfully to lead at the half-way stage. He then proceeded to the clean and jerk by lifting 166 kg in the first attempt and topped the rankings.
In the second attempt he raised the bar to 170 kgs but failed in his attempt. However he came back strongly and lifted the same weight in his final attempt to create a Commonwealth Games record with a total of 313 kgs to clinch the gold medal.
