“The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is delighted to announce shuttler PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, as the Flagbearer of Team India at the Opening Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games,” said IOA in a statement.

CWG India Flag Bearer: Interestingly, it was Sindhu, who was the flag bearer of India in the last edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2018 at Gold Coast, Australia as well. With the kind of achievements in her illustrious career, including two medals in Olympics, she fits the bills perfectly.
Sindhu will once again be looked upon as a strong gold medal in her women’s singles event. She has featured in the Commonwealth Games twice and has failed to win the elusive gold. Shas has a silver and bronze in her last two attempts.
However, the IOA even looked at other options, including Tokyo Olympic medallists MIrabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain. But the IOA finally decided to go for Sindhu.

“Alongside Ms Sindhu, who medalled at the Rio 2016 Olympics and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, two other highly deserving athletes were considered to be Team India’s Flagbearer: weightlifter Ms Mirabai Chanu and boxer Ms Lovlina Borgohain, who are both Olympic medallists,” the statement further read.

“A four-member committee, comprising IOA Acting President Mr Anil Khanna, IOA Secretary General Mr Rajeev Mehta, IOA Treasurer Mr Anandeshwar Panday, and Team India Chef de Mission Mr Rajesh Bhandari, shortlisted the three athletes. Eventually, Mr Khanna and Mr Mehta selected Ms Sindhu as the Flagbearer for the Opening Ceremony.”
India are sending a solid contingent of more than 210 athletes the Commonwealth Games this time around, and there are expectations of a rich medal haul from the athletes in Birmingham. They will feature in multiple events across 15 different sports.
