CWG 2022- India at Commonwealth Esports Championships– Commonwealth Esports Championships are set to take place from August 6-7 in Birmingham. India is going to debut in this international esports tournament, going head to head with other Commonwealth nations like England, Wales and Australia. While the entire country will be rooting for the India players to come out with podium finishes and win medals, the participation alone might have done a lot to reinforce the pillars of the gaming industry in the country. Commonwealth Esports Championship  2022 will take place alongside the Summer Games. However, it will have its own branding, unique medals and more. If the rise of esports is taken into account, athletes can expect to see esports as a part of the main games as early as 2026.

Industry leaders speak on the future of Esports in India on the background of the CWG 2022 affiliation

Trinity Gaming co-founder, Shivam Rao, recently spoke to Exchange4Media on the growth of sponsorships post CWG 2022.

“There has been the rise in prominence of so-called non-endemic brands amongst sponsors and advertisers over the last couple of years and CWG will accelerate this more. You don’t have to be an endemic sports brand to show up in sports, and esports is such an essential part and even more after CWG, that gaming in the next coming years will be a place you build reach,” Rao told E4M.

Anurag Khurana, Founder and CEO, Penta Esports, also resonated with the same idea on the addition of esports to CWG 2022.

“While this is a pilot event, the event is still likely to bring attention to the Indian esports athletes at the event as they would be representing the country for the esports titles as will other athletes be for other sports,” Anurag told E4M.

Indian teams at Commonwealth Esports Championships

There are three different esports titles that will be played in the Commonwealth Esports Championships. India will be taking part in DOTA 2 and Rocket League. Hargun, jocse, Rushil_Y will represent India in the Rocket League bout and they have been placed in Group B alongside Canada, England and Wales. Moin Ejaz, Ketan Goyal, Abhishek Yadav, Shubham Goli, and Vishal Vernekar are the esteemed athletes chosen to represent the country in DOTA 2.

Krutin Shah, Co-founder and COO, Phyvital Inc, also spoke to Exchange4Media on the viewership these players are expected to pull in the upcoming tournament.

“Indian teams participating can expect to build fan followings and recognition across the globe. This will raise the profile of teams and players. If you consider the scale in terms of views and eyeballs for the event, it’s at par with some of the largest global events. So, it’s a great opportunity for marketers and advertisers.”

This is just the beginning of a huge fire that is expected to set in the emerging esports industry in India. As soon as the general population starts recognizing the young talents as professional athletes and not mere entertainers, esports will strive and drive a long way in the upcoming bright future of Indian sports.
