CWG 2022 India DAY 2 – Mirabai Chanu wins GOLD: Mirabai Chanu impressed once again impressed to win gold in the women’s 49 kg category in weightlifting on Saturday. She stood atop the podium with an overall lift of 201kg in the final, which was a one-sided affair. It was India’s first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games 2022 as well. Mirabai capped off a solid day for India in weightlifting. It was India’s third medal in the sport in Birmigham. Sanket Sargar and Gururaja Poojary won silver and bronze in the men’s 55 and 61 kg category.

To be fair, there was no competition for Mirabai in the final. There was a difference of 29 kgs between the champion and the silver medalist. It just shows the class of Mirabai, who had also won the Tokyo Olympics silver last year.

It is important to note that she attained a new Games record in the snatch category with a lift of 88kg. She even tried 90, but failed. In the clean and jerk, the Indian lifter had a best of 113kgs.

Miraba, who started Weightlifting in the year 2008 in Imphal, has become a household name in India. She currently trains in the National Camp in Patiala under the watchful eyes of her coach Vijay Sharma.
