CWG 2022 Hockey LIVE – India at CWG 2022: India’s men’s and women’s hockey team will enter the Commonwealth Games at Birmingham as one of the contenders for winning a medal. Indian men’s team led by Manpreet Singh won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics and the Men in Blue will be eyeing the gold medal. Meanwhile, Savita Punia led women’s team will aim for a podium finish after disappointing in the recently concluded World Cup where they finished in the ninth place. India Men’s Hockey Team
India will be playing with a full-strength squad in the men’s event with the team lead by Manpreet Singh. The team will also have big names like Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, striker Mandeep Singh. After winning the Olympic Bronze last year, expectations are high for the men’s team to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.
So far no team other than Australian has won the gold medal ever since Hockey was introduced at the Games in 1998. India’s best performances came in 2010 and 2014 editions where the team won the silver medal after losing the final to Australia.
In the upcoming edition, 10 teams have been divided into two groups of five teams each. India find themselves in Group B alongside hosts England, Canada, Wales and Ghana. Group A comprise Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Scotland.
The teams finishing on the top two spots in each group will progress to the semifinals, while the teams finishing in the third spot in either of the groups will be playing 5th place playoff. The teams finishing in the bottom two will be playing the seventh place and ninth place playoff matches respectively.

India Women’s Hockey Team
Goalkeeper Savita Punia, who led India in the Women’s World Cup this year will continued to lead the Indian women in the Commonwealth Games as regular skipper Rani Rampal, is still recovering from injury. After an underwhelming performance in the World Cup this year the team coached by Janneke Schopman will look to bounce back and put on a good show in the quadrennial event.
India’s hopes will rest on experienced forward Vandhana Katariya, who is expected to do the bulk of the scoring. She finished as the country’s highest goal-scorer in the Hockey World Cup with 3 goals to her name. While, Gurjit Kaur leads the team in defence. Indian women’s hockey team’s best performance came in the year 2002 where they won the gold. In 2006 at Melbourne, the team clinched silver. With no podium finishes since then. the women in blue are expected to fight hard to get to the podium in this year’s edition of the Commonwealth Games.
The Indian women are placed in Group A that also includes England, Canada, Wales and Ghana. Group B comprise Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Scotland.
