India cricket team star Washington Sundar did not take part in fielding drills during a practice session in Ahmedabad on Tuesday afternoon. After making his epic comeback to the longest format of the game in the IND vs NZ series, the Tamil Nadu all-rounder has been an integral part of India’s red-ball setup, in both home and away series. Ahead of the IND vs WI 1st Test, Sundar seems to have suffered an injury scare, sparking concerns for India.
Sundar injured before IND vs WI 1st Test?
As per Times of India, Sundar skipped catching drills on Tuesday due to an injured finger. The report states that India captain Shubman Gill was spotted having a chat with him while sitting on the drinks cart to enquire about the extent of the injury. His teammates, including Mohammed Siraj, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Ravindra Jadeja soon joined in to take a look at the injury and assess the extent of it.
The report states that while Sundar did bowl for long, he experienced discomfort and that he even asked the BCCI medical staff for extra taping on his hand. Washington will be crucial for India in the series, especially since they are playing at home. Should the all-rounder fail to recover in time for the IND vs WI 1st Test, then India would be forced to include Axar Patel in his place.
In that case, India’s spin unit will comprise of Jadeja, Kuldeep and Axar. Sundar has 32 wickets and 752 runs from 13 Tests so far, averaging 28.46 and 44.23 with ball and bat respectively.
