Washington Sundar might be India’s premier all-rounder, but it took him 10 years of IPL to get to his maiden fifty in the tournament. 68 matches and 48 innings later, the all-rounder finally got to raise his bat, as he scored 55 from 32 deliveries for GT vs DC, hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes. Just the sheer magnitude of this innings… this could be a total game-changer for Washi, who has struggled throughout his IPL career, to get decent opportunities with the bat.
Washington Sundar scores 50 after 48 innings
Prior to this, Washington Sundar‘s highest score in the IPL was 49, that he had achieved in the last edition. What was even better about the innings was, he stitched a 103-run partnership with Jos Buttler, who also got to his fifty. The innings however could be divided into three phases, where he got 29-odd in 12 deliveries, while he paused a while, and scored 15 off the next 16, and then again accelerated.
Just to talk about stats, this is one of the highest matches taken by any player to score their maiden 50. Ravindra Jadeja took 132 to score first, Axar Patel took 92, Ashwin took 71. Meanwhile, it was Shubman Gill who started off the proceedings in grand style. He went on to score 70 from 45 balls. Eventually they went on to post 210/4 against a very decent DC bowling attack. As far as Delhi bowling is concerned, they were poor largely.
Mukesh Kumar returned with figures of 1/55, Axar Patel gave away 32 runs in 3 overs, Kuldeep Yadav gave away 42 runs, while Vipraj Nigam was mighty expensive with 23 runs in the only over. This batting show by GT could finally take them to their maiden victory in IPL 2026, and had lost their previous two encounters.
