India created history in Ahmedabad on March 8 as they became the only team to defend the T20 World Cup title and bag it for the third time. India lifted the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 in a thrilling encounter against South Africa, winning by seven wickets at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. In Ahmedabad, it was a one-sided affair as India crushed New Zealand by 96 runs in the final to defend the title.

The next edition of the T20 World Cup 2028 will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

T20 World Cup 2026 Format & Points Table

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026. It will feature 20 teams in a 55-match tournament. The ICC retained the same format as the 2024 edition:

  • Group Stage: Teams divide into four groups of five. Each team plays the other four in its group once (round-robin). The top two teams from each group advance.
  • Super 8 Stage: The eight qualifying teams are split into two groups of four. They play round-robin matches within these groups (pre-determined seedings place teams regardless of group stage finishing position, with unseeded qualifiers inheriting seeded spots if needed). The top two from each Super 8 group proceed.
  • Knockouts: Two semi-finals follow, with winners advancing to the final.

T20 World Cup History

The inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, previously known as the ICC World Twenty20, took place in 2007. It was determined that the tournament would be held every two years, except in years when an ICC Cricket World Cup was scheduled, in which case it would occur the preceding year. The first edition was hosted in South Africa, where India emerged victorious over Pakistan in the final match. 

India currently hold the T20 World Cup title after defeating South Africa in the 2024 final, securing their second championship victory.
