They deserved a hundred: Shubman Gill on declining Ben Stokes's offer to draw in Manchester

Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar declined Ben Stokes' offer for a draw before slamming their respective tons

Shubman Gill has lavished praise on Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja after they guided India to a draw in the IND vs ENG 4th Test. Gill’s wicket had thrown caution to the wind, but Jadeja and Sundar batted through to tire out the English attack in Manchester. Drama ensued late in the day when the duo rejected the offer to draw, while inching closer to their respective milestones.

Left it to the boys: Gill on Jadeja-Sundar centuries

Late on Day 5, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar were offered a draw by England skipper Ben Stokes, but the batters in the middle, refused. The duo had batted out for more than a session, and were in their 80s. Test hundreds are hard to come by and the Indian batters wanted to get theirs after a day’s hard work. Tempers flared after, with Ben Stokes saying, “You’re gonna get a Test hundred against Harry Brook?”

Jadeja and Sundar did not mind and got their tons before settling for a draw. Shubman Gill was pleased from the balcony as they celebrated their respective tons. The Indian captain even asked Jadeja to bring out his trademark sword celebration.

Speaking after the game, Gill was quizzed whether declining the offer for a draw was a team decision. The Indian captain said, “It was up to the boys in the middle. They batted brilliantly and were in 90s. We thought they deserved a century there.”

Their centuries helped India draw the Test before heading to the final game of the series at The Oval. England are still leading 2-1, but a win could see India avoid a series defeat.
