Poor batting, questionable captaincy: How Sri Lanka find themselves at the brink of Asia Cup 2025 exit

Charith Asalanka's Sri Lanka side have fallen apart in the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 and need more than a miracle to make it to the final.

Defending champions Sri Lanka are on the brink of an exit following their 5-wicket loss to Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. The Lankans have now lost both their Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 matches, and need a miracle to qualify for the summit clash. For a side that finished atop the group of death, the world has come crashing down for Charith Asalanka and Co on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka’s win over Afghanistan helped Bangladesh qualify for the Super 4s. Now, the Lankans need the Bangla Tigers to do something improbable to remain within contention. Asalanka and Co need Bangladesh to win their remaining two games and hope to clinch a win over India in their final encounter. Before we get to that, it is fair to note that Bangladesh have not beaten India in their last 8 attempts. Sri Lanka’s hopes rest in India losing two matches, when they lost 3 in 35 since the start of 2024. Stranger things have happened in cricket, but as things stand the Lankans have one foot through to a flight back home.
