South Africa batter Rassie van der Dussen has called time on his international career, bringing down the curtain on a journey that labelled him as a ‘late bloomer’. The 37-year-old confirmed his decision on April 2 through a social media post, stepping away from all three formats after nearly eight years at the highest level.
Van der Dussen’s retirement does not come as a complete surprise. He was recently left out of Cricket South Africa’s central contract list, and his last international appearance had come back in August 2025 in a T20I against Australia. Still, his exit marks the end of one of the more consistent batting careers South Africa have seen in the modern era.
Late bloomer who became South Africa’s most reliable ODI batter
Van der Dussen’s story was never about early hype. He made his international debut at 29, well past the age when most players are already established. But once he got in, he did not take long to make an impact.
He remains the only cricketer to score a half-century on debut in all three formats. In ODIs, he was particularly prolific. He finished with 2,657 runs in 71 matches at an average of 50.13, the second-best for a South African after AB de Villiers. He was also the fastest South African to reach 2,000 ODI runs, getting there in just 45 innings.
Across formats, he played 18 Tests (905 runs), 71 ODIs (2,657 runs) and 57 T20Is (1,406 runs). While he never quite cemented a long-term role in Tests, his white-ball numbers were great. One of his standout moments came during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he scored a commanding 133 against New Zealand.
Van der Dussen also had a brief stint in the IPL with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2022. While he featured in only three matches, he often spoke about how that experience helped him understand conditions in the subcontinent better. He built a reputation as a batter who could be trusted in tough situations, particularly against strong attacks. His performances against India, including a match-winning 75* in a 212-run chase in Delhi in 2022 was perhaps his best T20I knock.
