Duleep Trophy Highlights, day 2: Auqib Nabi's double hat-trick, Malewar's 200 dominate proceedings

Duleep Trophy is the curtain-raiser for the 2025-2026 domestic season, which gets underway with the Ranji Trophy.

J&K cricketers are soon leaving a mark on the national stage and it is safe to say, some are in contention to represent the country sooner rather than later. Auqib Nabi, the pacer has been quite sensational in the last year or so. First, in the last Ranji Trophy season, he went on to pick 44 wickets in just eight matches, at an average of 13.93, and now, he has proved his worth in the Duleep Trophy 2025.

Auqib Nabi’s Four Wickets Rattles NE Zone

Representing the North Zone, the 28-year-old speedster rattled the North East Zone as he picked four wickets in four deliveries on Thursday to put his team in a commanding position. In the 53rd over of the innings, he first got rid of Suraj Jaiswal, followed by Kanhaiya Wadhawan, Manishi, and lastly Mukhtar Hussain.

Eventually their innings folded for 230, in reply to North Zone’s 405, with Auqib Nabi returning with figures of 5/28 in his 10 overs. Meanwhile, he is only the third bowler in the history of the tournament to pick a hat-trick — after Kapil Dev and Sairaj Bahutule. Kapil had achieved the mark in 1978/79 season against West Zone at the Feroze Shah Kotla. Bahutule had gone on to record his feat on 2000 season against the East Zone in Pune.

Mohammed Shami’s 100 Raises Questions

Even though Mohammed Shami looked in decent form on the first day of the encounter, but his figures 1/100 don’t do much justice to him. He bowled 23 overs where his economy was over 4, while the other zone bowlers were expensive too. Manishi, who picked up six wickets, gave runs at 4.97.

Danish Malewar Records Maiden 200

On the other hand, in the Central Zone vs North East Zone encounter, batter Danish Malewar recorded his first 200 in FC cricket, on Duleep Trophy debut. He was retired out eventually for 203, but looked fluent throughout his innings. That meant, his team went on to score 532/4d, while the opponents were restricted to only168/7.
