Rajasthan Royals find themselves in a very tough position at the moment. First, the franchise is grappling with the Sanju Samson issue. Then, on Saturday, head coach Rahul Dravid decided to part ways with the team as he turned down the offer to be given a broader position. In the build up to IPL 2026, RR now not only have to find a new coach but potentially break the existing deadlock within the team to finalize a new full-time captain as well.
What next for Samson and RR?
As per Times of India, a source claimed that the decision on Sanju Samson was still under consideration. Earlier in June, reports claimed that the Kerala keeper-batter had sought his release from the team, via trade. However, Samson has penned an contract with RR that requires him to stay till 2027. Hence, the decision to either retain or release Sanju is solely in the hands of the franchise and not the player.
“The decision on Sanju Samson is still under consideration,” a source claimed.
It was also widely speculated that Sanju had a fallout with coach Rahul Dravid, and the source denied any such happening. With regards to the captaincy, the decision is not yet made. “That too would be decided by the owner.” On the other hand, CSK reportedly had informal communication with the batter, but they too have gone back on their wish.
“No, no, we aren’t having any discussion with Rajasthan Royals about him at this moment,” a CSK official told. “It’s all rumours. We can’t tell about the future, but as of now, nothing.” Ashwin too had explained with clarity, that the deal seems improbable, since RR have nothing much to gain from the IPL trade deal.
Samson has been with RR for the majority of career in the IPL since making his debut in 2013. He played for DC in two seasons – 2016 and 2017 – before returning to Rajasthan in 201i8.
