The Eden Gardens pitch saga seems to be never ending as yet another revelation has come to the fore. Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly has now claimed that curators from the BCCI had taken over the wickets at Eden Gardens four days before the IND vs SA 1st Test. His remarks come amid a raging row over the surface where neither South Africa or India managed to go past 200 in both innings of the Test and the game was wrapped up in just 3 days.
New twist in Eden Gardens pitch saga
As per India Today, Ganguly revealed that he was in no way involved in deciding what sort of pitch was needed for IND vs SA 1st Test. He said that curators from the BCCI usually come and take over the wickets four days before the Test. Additionally, Ganguly said that Eden Gardens curator Sujan Mukherjee had also performed exceptionally well over the years, adding that some requests are made and were obliged.
“Curators from the BCCI come and take over the wickets four days before the Test match. We have our own curator (Sujan Mukherjee) as well, who’s done exceptionally well for a long time. The requests are made, and you keep the requests. That’s what it is,” Ganguly said.
However, Ganguly admitted that the pitch for the IND vs SA 1st Test wasn’t the best, adding that the Indian top-order and middle-order batters deserved to play on better wickets. He reiterated that it was imperative for Gautam Gambhir and Team India to play on better wickets than what they played on at the Eden Gardens.
“It was not the greatest, I’ll have to completely admit, and I think the top-order batting, the middle-order batting, you know, deserves a better cricketing surface. It was a full house at Eden Gardens for those three days, and I completely believe that Gautam Gambhir and his team in India must play on much better wickets than what they played at Eden Gardens,” said Ganguly.
