Australia will once again arrive at a Women’s Cricket World Cup as the team to beat. The seven-time champions, who lifted the trophy in New Zealand three years ago, have named a 15-member squad brimming with experience, and world-class talent promises for the upcoming edition in India and Sri Lanka.
Captain Alyssa Healy will lead the side in what will be her third ODI World Cup, supported by familiar names who have defined Australia’s dominance in women’s cricket. Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Ash Gardner and Tahlia McGrath form the backbone of a squad that already knows how to navigate pressure on the biggest stage.
Extremely strong Aussie unit
The return of Sophie Molineux adds depth to the spin attack, which also features Alana King and Georgia Wareham. Molineux has battled back from knee surgery earlier this year and is expected to be fit by the start of the tournament on September 30. “Sophie’s progress has been encouraging and we’re confident she’ll be ready to go,” team physio Kate Beerworth confirmed.
Young batter Georgia Voll is set for her first taste of World Cup cricket, while Phoebe Litchfield, Wareham, and Kim Garth also make their maiden 50-over World Cup squads. Their inclusion ensures Australia carry not just battle-hardened veterans but also fresh talent eager to prove themselves.
Australia selector Shawn Flegler emphasised the importance of balance in the squad, particularly for a World Cup staged in the subcontinent. “A World Cup in India is one of cricket’s biggest assignments, but we believe this group is up for the challenge. The valuable experience the squad has gained from recent sub-continent tours and the Women’s Premier League will be beneficial in tackling the unique demands of Indian conditions,” Flegler said.
Before the main event, Australia will face India in a three-match ODI series. For those games, wicketkeeper Nicole Faltum and all-rounder Charli Knott will join the group before returning home ahead of the World Cup.
