Ajit Agarkar to stay on as chief selector till June 2026, selection committee likely to see changes

Ajit Agarkar, who took over as chief selector in 2023, has accepted a contract extension and will now stay on till June 2026

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly extended Ajit Agarkar’s contract as the chairman of selectors. Earlier in June, reports had claimed that the former Indian cricketer was all but confirmed to get an extension. This has now been confirmed, with Agarkar set to stay at the helm of affairs well beyond the T20 World Cup in February 2026.

Agarkar’s contract as chief selector extended

As per The Indian Express, the BCCI reportedly offered Agarkar a contract extension till June 2026 a few months back and he had accepted it. Explaining the rationale behind extending his tenure, a BCCI official pointed out that not only had India won titles but Agarkar had also supervised the transition of the team in Tests and T20Is.

Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026 and he had accepted the offer a few months back,” a BCCI official told the publication.

Since taking over in July 2023, Agarkar has done exceptionally well. His experience as a former cricketer, coach (Delhi Capitals), and selector (Mumbai) has seen him succeed. During his tenure, Team India has won the T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Men in Blue also reached the final of the ODI World Cup 2023.

One change to selection committee expected

Further, the report states that one change could be made to the existing selection committee – with S Sharath likely to be replaced with a new face. He was promoted to the senior selection committee in January 2023. The current selection committee comprises Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra and S Sharath.

The BCCI will be calling for fresh applications going ahead. However, it is unclear whether the board will retain Das and Banerjee. The board is reportedly pleased with the current bunch and only one potential change could be made to the panel,” the report stated.
