The Indian women’s cricket team might just be on the verge of creating history again. The Harmanpreet Kaur-side have been on a massive high ever since they won the Women’s World Cup 2025, and now they have been nominated for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award 2026.
Indian women’s cricket team nominated for Laureus Awards
The same was confirmed by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the other nominations in the same category also include the likes of the England women’s football team, the Ryder Cup-winning European team, PSG and McLaren F1 team.
Laureus Sport said in a press release, “In its Cricket World Cup semifinal against Australia, the India Women’s Cricket Team pulled off the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI history (339) before winning their first title against South Africa and are the first women’s cricket team to be nominated for this award.”
Announcement on April 20
Earlier, the other Indians to earn a nomination in the Laureus awards are — Vinesh Phogat in 2019, Neeraj Chopra in 2022, and Rishabh Pant in 2025. As far as the winner is concerned, the call will be taken by the sporting jury and the members of the Laureus World Cports Academy.
The awards will be announced on April 20 at the Cibeles Palace in Madrid on April 20. This also happens to be the third consecutive time that Madrid is hosting the awards. Just to go back to what had happened in the World Cup final — Team India had gone on to beat South Africa by 52 runs, after scoring 298.
Shafali Verma scored 87 with the bat and went on to pick up two crucial wickets as well. Deepti Sharma scored 58 in as many deliveries. She later went on to pick up a fifer as well.
