The team has been part of the league since inception and was bought for Rs 464 crore (about US$111.6 million) by Vijay Mallya. The team was the second-most-expensive franchise in 2008. In 2015 the ownership changed hands with Diageo India buying the franchise.

History
Despite having a star studded squad year after year Royal Challengers Bangalore are yet to win a single IPL title in the history. The only time RCB came close to winning the IPL was back in 2011 courtesy of Chris Gayle brilliant performance with the bat that season. Ever since Virat Kohli was handed the captaincy in 2011, the team has been a mid table team and has appeared in teh final just once . The inaugural season (2008) and 2014 were the two lowest point of franchisee history where they could only win 4 and 5 matches respectively.
