The priority for all stakeholders, including the Indian management, BCCI, and Mumbai Indians is to ensure the longevity of the bowler’s career, not immediate gains. With little over six months left for the World Cup, Bumrah will not be considered for any fixtures leading up to the event to minimize the risk of compromising his long-term fitness. Jasprit Bumrah’s Progress

According to a source closely monitoring Bumrah’s progress, the focus is on the next four to five years rather than the next few months. The Indian cricket board wants to protect Bumrah, a valuable asset to the team across formats, and ensure that his rehabilitation goes according to plan, with an eye on the upcoming World Cup and the next ICC Test Championship cycle.

“We are not looking at next four-five months; our goal is next four-five years. Everyone is on the same page with regards to Bumrah. No one wants to take any chance now with him. He will not be rushed for any matches before the World Cup. That is the one and only goal for Bumrah right now. He will undergo long rehab and we are confident he will be fit in time for the World Cup,” said source tracking Bumrah’s progress.

Bumrah’s recent injury has taught everyone the importance of not rushing his return to the field. No comeback noise will be adopted for Bumrah now. And he will continue with his rehabilitation without any pressure to return too soon. The plan is to provide him with ample rest and rehab to ease into proper bowling fitness. His IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians, is also focused on the bigger picture, recognizing the significance of a fit Bumrah for the Indian cricket team.

Goals for Jasprit Bumrah in the long run

When fully fit, Bumrah is an asset to the Indian cricket team across all formats. BCCI wants to wrap him in cotton wool and make sure his rehab goes as planned. The World Cup and the next ICC Test Championship cycle, which includes numerous away tours, are currently on their minds.

Bumrah will miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), World Test Championship final against Australia, and Asia Cup. The right-arm pacer had already missed the T20 World Cup in 2022 and the high-profile home Test series against Australia this year.

“Who wouldn’t want Bumrah to play all cricket for India this year? Everyone does but we need to be practical in our approach and do what is best for Bumrah and Indian cricket. All we want is to have him complete the rehab and not be distracted by any other thoughts. We have already entered crucial few years for Indian cricket and the next cycle of WTC continues to hold a lot of importance,” said an official aware of the plan laid out for Bumrah.

A look back at the past

There have been desperate attempts over the past 6–8 months to get Bumrah back on the field. The seamer played two T20 Internationals against Australia in September last year. But he missed the T20 Internationals against South Africa and also missed T20 World Cup owing to back issues. The additional testing at NCA confirmed the severity of his injury.

Even his IPL team, the Mumbai Indians, is keeping an eye on the big picture. They are aware of how crucial it is for Bumrah to be healthy for the Indian team. The management is aware of the severity of Bumrah’s condition. And he will not play for MI in the upcoming IPL season after undergoing surgery in March.
