India 2023: Kane Williamson Injury – New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will likely miss the Cricket World Cup later this year after an evaluation of the knee injury he sustained in the first game of the Indian Premier League 2023. Williamson injured his right knee while making his Gujarat Titans debut on Saturday, and had to be carried off the field. Williamson is now unlikely to be fit and eligible for selection at this year’s Cricket World Cup in India given the typical rehabilitation timelines. Within the next three weeks, Williamson will presumably have knee surgery. Williamson wished to express his gratitude for the support he had received in the wake of his injury after learning the news.

“I’ve received great support over the past few days and want to thank both the Gujarat Titans and New Zealand Cricket for that.

“Naturally it’s disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab.

“It’s going to take some time, but I’ll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible.”

India hosts the World Cup from October 5 to November 19. Williamson was instrumental in the Black Caps’ two prior World Cup campaigns, during which they got to the final in 2015 and 2019. This is a huge loss for the team. Williamson vowed to help the team in any way he could even though the World Cup now seems unlikely.

“I look forward to doing what I can to support Gary and the team over the next few months.”

During the Titans’ opening game, Williamson suffered an injury while leaping for a catch on the boundary. He required several minutes of medical attention before being helped off the field. The Kiwi palmed the ball back into play to prevent two runs from crossing the rope, but he then landed awkwardly on his right leg and collapsed, clutching his hurt knee.

He was helped off the pitch after getting treatment for several minutes and did not return. Williamson appeared in his first game for Gujarat since joining the team from Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he had been since 2015.
