The National Cricket Academy (NCA) had suggested Iyer from Day 1 to go for the surgery. But Iyer continued to delay it in the hope of playing games. He even began alternative treatments (ayurvedic). However, now like Hardika Pandya, Iyer will travel to London to get the operation on his bulging disc.
The time for the surgery is yet to be decided. And the recovery from the surgery takes a minimum of 5 months, and that would mean that his participation in the 50-over World Cup in India in October-November could be touch and go.

“Yes, he will have his back surgery abroad. He is likely to be out of action for at least five months with full rehabilitation,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. The WTC final will be played between India and Australia in London from June 7.
Now, this is a big blow for the Indian team. Iyer will not only play no part in the ongoing IPL 2023 campaign but will also not be a part of the Indian team that will face Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) finals.
The recurring lower-back injury had forced Iyer out of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last month, before ruling him out of the ODI series against Australia that followed.

- He has a bulging disc in his back with surgery imminent.
- A surgery would rule him out for 7 months, risking his participation in ODI World Cup.
- Shreyas was unwilling to do so and was looking at alternatives to manage the injury.
- The BCCI and NCA were kept in the loop regarding the same.
- He has begun ayurvedic treatment for his back.
- But now he has decided to get his surgery in London and will miss the entire of IPL 2023 and the WTC finals.
