Chelsea dominated an uneventful first half in which they wasted multiple opportunities to test Guillermo Ochoa in the América goal (before the Mexico international was replaced on the half-hour mark by veteran keeper Óscar Jiménez).
Thomas Tuchel decided to rotate his entire starting 11 at halftime. The changes had the desired effect, with Chelsea’s attack looking increasingly dangerous before Timo Werner gave them the lead.
Darting down the right wing, Christian Pulisic’s pull back found the Germany international in space in the six-yard area.

Werner’s first effort was expertly denied by the outstretched hand of Jiménez, but the veteran goalkeeper could only palm the ball back to the 26-year-old who cooly finished the second time around.
Against the run of play, however, América were given a lifeline. Reece James played a blind backpass to keeper Marcus Bettinelli who had stepped away from his goal and couldn’t recover in time as the ball rolled over the line.
América struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities as Chelsea continued to look dangerous before Mason Mount provided a moment of much-needed quality.
Evading a sliding challenge, the 23-year-old got the ball out of his feet before bending a wicked shot into the bottom corner to restore Chelsea’s lead.
