Chelsea: Champions League: Chelsea’s hopes of even one silverware this season has ended mercilessly as Real Madrid put two more past them during the Champions League quarter-final second-leg match. With a 4-0 scoresheet in aggregate Chelsea have been knocked out of another competition. Thiago Silva burst out after Chelsea’s poor show of performance last evening. He acknowledged the changes the club is going through, but he also pointed out that the new management needs to have a strategy. He pointed out that the management is already taking incorrect steps, like bringing huge numbers of players or changing manager after manager without giving it a proper thought.

Silva said, “I think the first step has been made. An incorrect step, but it has been made. We can’t be blaming the managers if we don’t take responsibility. It’s a hard period for the club, with a lot of indecision. Change of ownership, new players arriving – we had to increase the size of the changing room because it didn’t fit the size of the squad.”

He added, “A positive point is that there are amazing players in the squad but on the other hand… There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play. The manager can only pick 11 from a squad of 30-something – that’s tough. Some can’t make the squad, we signed eight in January, we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.”

Chelsea was defeated by a Real Madrid side that has not been in its best form this season. Even though Karim Benzema has shown some world-class performance at 35 years of age this season, Real Madrid has underperformed in several matches. This included their Champions League quarter-final second-leg match against Chelsea where they left Chelsea with several clear-cut chances to score.

The main problem that Chelsea faced was taking those opportunities and turning the game in their favour. Silva will be turning 39 years of age before the start of their next season. As per Chelsea’s situation this season, they won’t be qualified for the Champions League next season. Hence, this defeat against Real Madrid could have become his last Champions League match. Hence, his outburst regarding the matter seems understandable.

About Chelsea’s change of manager multiple times, he said, “Everybody talks too much about replacing managers. I think we, as players, must also take responsibility. We have had three managers this season, plus a fourth with Bruno where we failed to win. We have lost today and with Lampard we have failed to win. Everybody is talking about the manager but we must look at what has been done wrong and try to change.”
